Flowing through a picturesque valley the Barrow has a moderate to fast flow. Good Pike can be found from Bagnalstown all the way down to the waters at St. Mullins. Below Borris at Clashganny you can catch Bream, Tench, Rudd, Hybrids, Perch and Pike. The quiet canal waters at Tinnahinch you can see Rudd and Tench.

Season:

All year around.

All legal methods. No live bait with Pike fishing.

The Barrow is a mixed fishery also with Salmon and Trout being caught. Bream fishing is best between April and October. The east bank above Carlow, near the bacon factory stretch gives good catches of Bream an Rudd feed freely in the summer months. Tench is best in May and June. Pike fishing is good all year around.

With the water stretching about 120 miles long, the Barrow drains a huge area which consists of mountain, bog, pastureland and tillage farming. The Salmon fishing is regarded as poor here, and catches are mostly of Grilse which are taken during the summer. Brown trout fishing is excellent with catches weighing from 0.5 lbs to 1.25 lbs depending on the area.

Season:

The Salmon and Sea trout fishing is done between February 1st - September 30th, whereas Brown trout are taken between March 1st - September 30th.

Fly and spin.

Cost: Some of the fishing is free, and information on day tickets can be got from Mr Nicholas Blanchfield, Saint Mullin's, Co. Carlow or Mr Frank Hynes, Cournellan, Borris.
