The river Fergus rises north-west of Corrofin and enters the Shannon Estuary at Newmarket-on-Fergus.

There is limited bream here which provides sport during the summer months. Rudd to specimen size feed freely in the summer. From mid May to September Tench fishing is good. The river also contains Perch and Pike, with winter Pike producing the best fish.

This is a limestone river with several interconnected lakes along its course. Good stocks of Brown trout are held here and the river Fergus is noted as a Salmon fishery and gets a good run of Spring salmon and grilse. The upper reaches fish best for Brown trout in high water, and the lower river fishes best when the water drops with trout averaging 0.75 lbs.

Season:

Salmon fishing begins from 1st February - 30th September with Spring salmon at their best in February and March. Brown trout fishing begins from 15th February - 30th September.

Methods:

Fly but spinning and worming are the most effective.
